Ready position

“You have to be in ready position,” the instructor said. “You never know what I’m going to throw at you.”

I joined a backhand clinic at our local tennis club to try to smooth out my erratic backhand. In a backhand clinic, you start to believe the instructor will only feed you backhands. You start to adopt your body position to anticipate it. When a forehand ball comes instead, you can’t handle it.

Not good. In tennis, you have to be ready for anything.

Keep the body centred, balanced forward, with the racquet in the middle. No matter what the instructor feeds you, you’re ready. You don’t need to backtrack or recover to respond.

Life is like that, too.

Our days take on a pattern, and we start to believe life will only feed us more of the same pattern. We start to adopt our body positions to anticipate it. When an unexpected event happens instead, we can’t handle it.

Not good. In life, we have to be ready for anything.

Keep yourself centred, balanced forward with all the tools your body, mind, spirit needs in the middle. No matter what life feeds you, you’re ready. You don’t need to backtrack or recover to respond.

Ready positions, everyone.
