Oprah’s power source

“The more you praise and celebrate your life, the more there is in life to celebrate.”
Oprah Winfrey

Rich, powerful, and influential—we use those words most often to describe corporate CEOs, prominent politicians or Mafia kingpins. We use those words most often to describe people who gained their wealth and influence through acts of ruthless self-interest.

For that reason, I love that those three words apply to Oprah Winfrey, one of the richest, most powerful, and most influential people on the planet. I love that she gained the  wealth and influence when she turned her work in the direction of spirit and the pursuit of the best in all of us.

I don’t know what Oprah’s intentions were when she started her broadcasting career all those years ago.Perhaps she wanted fame, or a good salary. Maybe she just followed a path that she couldn’t help but take. What I do know is that there was a turning point in her show. It went from being a Phil Donohue-esque entertainment show to a soul-touching, life-changing enterprise.

With spirit as the power source, people responded like never before.

When Tom Hanks opened her farewell extravaganza this week, he looked around the auditorium full of screaming fans, and he told Oprah that she was surrounded by a room full of love. And she was. You could feel it.

She earned it through her persistent pursuit of the best in all of us. She earned it through years of praising and celebrating life. We can’t all be Oprah, but we can all persistently pursue the best in all of us. We can choose to praise and celebrate life.

If we do, I think we’ll notice people responding to us like never before.
