Love-hate relationship

Rachel Plefger designed this wonderful T-shirt. The shirt itself bears the word “Hate,” but when you stand beside a mirror, the reflection reads “Love.”

At first I wondered why the designer put the word Hate on the shirt instead of Love. After all, anyone wearing it without the benefit of a mirror permanently at their side would walk around with Hate being their only message. This would not make for good first impressions.

But when I thought about it a little more, I realized that this way, upon reflection, Hate transforms into Love. Something negative becomes something positive.

If it were the other way around, upon reflection, Love would transform into Hate. Something positive would become something negative.

It also speaks to me about the potential for good. Sometimes we look at people or situations, and all we can see is the negative, the hate. Without the necessary equipment in place to allow us to view the flip side, we forget that any time there is hate, there is the potential for love.

Like Nemo and telling his father that he hates him in Finding Nemo, what appears on the surface as hate is actually love. We just need the right lenses, the right equipment, to see it.

Upon reflection, I’m with Rachel. I’ll go with Hate transforming into Love.
