Tarra and Bella

Many authors rely on the age-old practice of using animals to teach human lessons. Stories like Animal Farm by George Orwell or The Jungle Book by Rudyard Kipling allow us to detach from our humanity and look at ourselves from above. The detachment relieves the pressure, presents us from putting up walls against preachiness and draws us into life lessons that enhance our humanity.

Occasionally the real animal world cooperates and writes a real-life story to inspire us. CBS News covered the story of Tarra and Bella, an 8,700 pound Asian elephant and a dog at the Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tenn.  The mismatched pair eats together, drinks together, sleeps together and play together. The news clip describes how the two pined for each other during a period of separation.

As reporter Steve Hartman says: “They harbor no fears, no secrets, no prejudices. Just two living creatures who somehow managed to look past their immense differences. Take good look at this couple, America. Take a good look world.

If they can do it – what’s our excuse?”
